You are starting your business. You are excited about all the possibilities. You hear a lot of advice and one thing that keeps on coming up is that you need to define your target market in order to be successful. “But if I narrow my market, then I will lose business.” I hear that one a lot. “I don’t know who my target market is. I just started.” Both are objections, I hear often when I advise clients to define their target market.
Because of these fears or insecurities, a lot of coaches and solopreneurs take a more general approach and market to “everybody who needs me.” This is like trying to shoot a target with a shotgun. Some of the bullets might hit the target, but most will not. It is a very different picture if you are shooting at your target with a riffle with a sight. Every bullet hits the target. You have great clients that fit with you and it is a great working relationship. Additionally, you really need to know your target market in order to know where to find them. Then you can target your marketing in exactly those channels. Also, when you know who your target market is, you can customize your marketing message and will reach them even better. Now, let’s find out how you can find your target market in 3 simple steps.
The first step is to find the character traits of people you enjoy being around. Who do you enjoy being around? What character traits do they have in common? Are the detail-oriented or do they not care about details? Are they adventurous or more conservative? Are they strong-minded or uncertain? Make a list of the character traits the people you like to be around have in common. Watch for those character traits that speak to you.
The second step is to think about demographics. Do you work better with men or women? If you are a coach, who can you talk to easier? What age group do you connect with? Do you work better with single people or married ones? What is the medium income of people you usually enjoy being around? Make sure you do your research based on who you enjoy being around and who needs your services.
The third step is putting it all together. Imagine one person who has the character traits and the demographics you found you enjoy being around. It can be a real person or a fictive one. Maybe you look at the description and think “wow; that sounds like my friend Sandra.” Your target market is then the “Sandras” in the world. You will focus your marketing message on the Sandras and you will market in the channels, the Sandras use. It is the same with a fictive person. Give your fictive person a name: Joe or Alison, for example. Now, you will make sure that everything you write or do, would get to the Joes or Alisons of the world.
It is really rewarding finding your target market. Marketing will become easier since you know exactly what moves your market. Through this, you will gain more clients. Also, you will be happier with the clients you find, since they belong to the people you enjoy being around.
Congratulations, you found your target market in just 3 simple steps.
Knowing who your target audience is one of the key elements of successful Social Media Marketing. It is one of the most important elements of any business. In order to find your target audience, you need to think about who would buy your product or service. Are they predominantly male or female? How old are they? Where would they live? Look at education, income, marital status, ethnic and religious background. Where do they work? Do they work full-time or part-time? Do they have children? You need to consider everything.
I find it is easier to image your perfect target client instead of a whole lot of people. Just one person. This will be the person you market to. You need to image that one person with all the details that you can. Hobbies, interests, favorite color and favorite food. Once you created this imaginary target person, you can go ahead and market to her/him. You write all your marketing material so this person would want to contact you. Try it out.
Social media is everywhere and you know by now that you should be riding the wave as well. Maybe you even tried it out already. Did you reach the results that you wanted?
One of the key factors for social media success is to know your business goals. You need to answer the question: “why do I want to use social media?” Without knowing your ultimate goal, you will be a ship without a rudder. You need to know where you want to head to in order to choose the right way how to get there.
The second key factor for social media success is that you need to know your target audience. If you do not know what your target audience needs, you are shooting with a shotgun instead of a rifle. You might get them and you might not. Especially important are the needs and wants of your target audience, so you can choose the right channels and the right approach to reach them.
The final key factor for social media success is that you need to have a strategy in place and use it. You know what you want to achieve, you know what your target audience needs, now you need to plan the best strategy how to get there. Do not forget to add specific measurements into your strategy, so you can measure where you are in your plan.
All three together will lead you to be successful in social media.
