In the second part of your Google+ profile, we will look at your profile photo, your about page and your links.
Let’s take a look at your profile photo. Like in all social networks make sure your picture is professional. It will appear everywhere you are, comment and post in Google+. If you like my Google+ frame, here are the instructions on how to do that:
The URL to go to get the frame is http://turhan.me/+me/
Once you have a great picture, let’s take a look at your about page. The first part of the about page is your introduction. You can write as much or as little as you want to. Keep in mind that people usually browse and will not take the time to read a whole lot. You can format your text with bold, italics, underline and bullet points. One of the really great features is that you can add links to your introduction. Why is that so great? As you are writing your introduction, you can link to your services page on your website, a blog post you have written that shows what you can do or anything else that you can link to that can showcase your ability. Space it out nicely and you have a visually appealing Google+ profile. Don’t forget to use your keywords. Google+ searches through the about pages for their search bar.
After the introduction, just fill out the other parts as well: bragging rights, education, places you have lived, your contact information, what you are looking for and if you want your profile visible in search. For the places you have lived, just use one row for each place. Google+ will display a map with pointers where you have lived.
The last part of your Google+ profile are your links. On the right sidebar of your profile you can add your other profiles on the web. Add the ones that you want other people to visit and connect with you as well.
Your profile is now filled out. Alone that you went through the work of filling it out will make you more visible since a lot of people don’t take the time for that.
I invite you to come to my profile and circle me as well. After you have finished with your profile, send me a quick note so I can come and look at it and circle you too.
A profile in every social network is very important. It is your “first impression” of another person. In order to get a great profile together in Google+, I cover every part of the profile.
The first part is about your header. Your header consists of your name, your tagline and a row of 5 pictures. Make sure you have your name in the top and a great tagline. Both will display every time you comment or post something. Make it catchy and memorable. Let people know what you are about.
With the pictures, you should make sure that you have relevant pictures in there. If you have a business, make sure the pictures are professional (meaning in good taste and rated for all audiences). If you want to be more personal, just add pictures from you. The pictures will not change all the time like in Facebook. The 5 that you add in there will stay there (in the same order) until you change them. A great idea is to add a picture pano in your profile. Here is a video from Scott Kelby explaining you how to do that: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycUepb68ygo.
Google+ is the new social network on the blog. Well, it really is not that new anymore, just when you compare it to the other social networks. You have already accounts in Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube. Now you are supposed to add another network? Why?
You need to be in Google+ because every public post goes straight to the Google search engine. I am not kidding. I have Google Alerts set up for my keywords, so I get an email every time something pops up in Google about those keywords. I have never gotten a keyword alert for a Twitter post, a Facebook post, a LinkedIn update or a YouTube post. But every time I post in Google+ (and make it public) I get a Google keyword alert. Not for my name, but for my keyword. Now that is powerful. A really good reason to be in Google+.
You need to be in Google+ because it is the fastest growing social network. Facebook took 3 years to hit 25 million users. Twitter took 30 months to hit 25 million users. Google+ added more than 25 million users in the first month. In August 2011 (2 months after launch) 13% of U.S. adults signed up already for Google+. Check out the infographic about the people on Google+ at the end of the post. Did you find your target market in the top 10 occupations? What about the big slice of entrepreneurs on Google +? For sure a good reason to be in Google+.
You need to be in Google+ because people read what you have to say. That is a funny reason. Sure you want people to read what you post! Aren’t they?
45% of Google+ members read content on Google+ daily. Only Facebook can beat that number.
3 great reasons to be on Google+: your posts will be found be Google search, it is the fastest growing social network and people read your posts. I am on Google+ and you can find me right here:
You have seen the +1 button at the bottom of posts, so you can share them on Google. That is great to have, but you should also have a Google + profile button on your website. You have all the other social network buttons on your website, so why not Google +? But how do you do that?
Really easy! Just go to the Google+ profile button page . In there, you can choose different sized buttons to add to your website. In order to get the buttons in the right direction, you will need your Google + profile url.
Where can you find your Google + profile url? First, sign in in Google +. Then, click on your name at the top right corner (next to the share button). In the box that opens up, click on “profile.” Now, you should have a url like this displayed in your browser: https://plus.google.com/?tab=XX#101995515294265378007/posts. Now, you can change this url to: https://plus.google.com/101995515294265378007/. Basically, you use the number after the # - this is your Google id. Add this url into the Google + profile url box. Now, you can copy and paste the code and add it where you want it in your website.
You can see my Google + profile button in the sidebar. Click on it and add me to your circle!
